Summit tour with "the WU" Hochwexltrail

Closed

Difficulty: Difficult

driving technique and stamina required

This sporty and very demanding tour meanders its way along simple uphill Singletrails and forest tracks to the highest point of the Wechsel, the Hochwechsel summit, at 1,743 m (5,718 ft), where the flagship of the Panorama Trails, “The WU”, awaits. The route in detail:

Uphill route:

Starting from the Trail Centre via the Uphill Flowtrail (uphill single trail, narrow mountainbike uphill stretches with intermittent roots and stones) and finally from the reservoir pond along forest tracks (with loose ground) up to the Hochwechsel.

You can stop to catch your breath at the reservoir pond (at approx. 1,158 m (3,799 ft) altitude), at the Kampsteiner Schwaig (at approx. 1,400 m (4,593 ft) altitude) and in between as needed. If you get hungry you can make a lunch time stop at the Feistritzer Schwaig hut, where you can order a great "Jausn" and enjoy the view.

Downhill trails:

After the long uphill sections, you can get going with the first downhill trail. “The WU”, a Singletrail (blue / easy, approx. 2.7 km (1.7 mi) long with a 265 m (869 ft) climb), which starts form the highest point of the Wechsel, passes by blueberries and cattle over roots and stone slabs with a constant view towards Vienna and Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedlersee).

After that, it is time for a well-earned lunch break with a hearty Alpine hut meal at the Marienseer Schwaig Hütte. They have the best fresh butter milk, in case you can't decide on what to drink there ;)

After lunch, you can head back towards the Trail Centre along comfortable forest tracks. On the way back, a few particularly easy trails await.

Just after the Kampsteiner Schwaig you branch off onto the Almrauschtrail (blue / easy) and shred your tyres over roots, stones and the soft forest floor towards the Almrauschhütte.

There, you can refill your water bottles and have a short break before heading back to the Trail Centre and the exit point. Either back via the forest track (easy) or, if you still have enough energy, via the Singletrail (medium difficulty / red).

The Singletrail winds along with curves and small compressions over roots, stones, steep sections and partially natural forest floor – it really does have all the ingredients for a perfect endurance ride for the last trail of the day.

From the reservoir, take the Flowtrail back to the exit point.

Once you have reached the bottom, you can enjoy a cool beer or soft drink in the Wexl Lounge.
